Data Conversion
There are several ways that ONEIL can convert your legacy data into a modern document management system. S1000D is a popular choice because it is based on XML and has a very defined, yet flexible data structure that can be carried from document to document. All your documentation, when converted, can be updated simultaneously when part numbers or names or procedures change. It cuts the time and attention to detail that traditional changes to a documentation set requires. It also makes translation into other languages very easy because of its well-defined structure.
S1000D Conversion
Traditional technical information is structured in a paper-based manual (volumes, chapters, sections, work packages, etc.). S1000D, however, is typically structured to represent the physical or functional (or both) breakdown of the systems, subsystems, sub-subsystems, equipment, assemblies, and components (called "The Product") of the project. Hence, the conversion process isn't as easy as just converting to SGML/XML. The data actually has to be broken up into more granular chunks of information that adhere to the internationally approved data structure.
Legacy Systems Data
We have carried out significant work to map the data elements of various legacy systems to those of S1000D. We have found that, with few exceptions, S1000D can indeed capture all the data that resides in those legacy systems. Where an exception is found, a change request is submitted to the TPSMG (Technical Publication Support Maintenance Group) S1000D committee to help S1000D adapt to meet all the needs of your legacy systems.
Our skills grow continually through the conversion of additional specifications. To date, we are able to provide conversion to S1000D from such legacy systems as;
- MIL-STD 2361B
- MIL-STD 40051
- MIL-STD 38784
- MIL PRF 87269
- MIL-STD 1388 2b
- ATA 2200
