Legacy Graphics Conversion
Graphics conversion can be a "minefield" when dealing with legacy data. Loss of integrity and even loss of data are common challenges. Proprietary file types can wreak havoc when the software becomes unavailable. This is precisely why ONEIL is committed to non-proprietary industry standards like CGM.
Yet, there are methods that can make conversion easier if you have the right tools and the right people.
Graphics File Conversion is Approached in Several Ways
- We have in-house programs that set up specific CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) profiles at the beginning of a conversion project. They are built to customer specifications and adhere to industry standards. This creates a virtually error-free conversion environment.
- CGM format conformity is a useful check when a customer provides CGMs from many sources that may contain varying levels of accuracy.
- Initially, we verify the customer's requirements and program our in-house conversion software so that our illustrator starts with and exports to the correct CGM profile. The chance for error is eliminated so that every CGM file produced matches the customer’s requirements.
We recommend that all illustrations and graphics are stored as a file type that is non-proprietary, standards-based, and contains usable geometric and textual data for a good source file. Image files are good for presentations, but reliable source files must be maintained for graphic integrity.
Legacy Graphics Conversion Can be Complex
Converting legacy material often requires more work than a simple push-button conversion. With ONEIL, you can rest assured that we will handle any of the issues that can emerge during the legacy file conversion process, including:
- Clean-up and improvement of legacy content. Issues such as line weight, misspelled words, incorrect or disproportional attaching hardware are identified and corrected when they are found.
- Resolution of legacy file composition issues. Some graphic applications produce unpredictable CGM output that can pose unique challenges at the individual file level. ONEIL can help with many conversion issues, including:
- Archaic or proprietary files
- Tangency of lines and arcs
- Layers
- Groupings
- Some legacy file conversion issues may require complete reconstruction to correct. Often these problems cannot be identified until work begins. ONEIL identifies these issues when they are found and lets the client decide whether or not they want to invest in complete file re-creation.
