Honeywell–Grimes Lighting & Electronics (L&E) is located in Urbana, Ohio and is an industry leader in aircraft lighting and cockpit displays. Some of the types of lighting products Honeywell manufactures are: passenger service units, strobe lights, landing lights, and cockpit lights, to name a few.
O'Neil & Associates, Inc. has been doing business with Honeywell–Grimes for over 35 years. Today, we are focused mainly on their lighting and display product lines and produce all their Aircraft Maintenance Manuals (AMMs), Component Maintenance Manuals (CMMs), Service Bulletins (SBs), Pilot Guides, and Installation Manuals.
In 2000, Honeywell–Grimes expanded their market into high tech cockpit display units. These are custom engineered products which are used to monitor the aircraft systems and inform and/or alert flight crews of flight navigation and potentially hazardous conditions. The figure shown is a Multifunction Radar Display (MFRD) developed by Honeywell–Grimes. O'Neil wrote the Component Maintenance Manual (CMM), Pilot Guide, and Installation Manual for this unit.
We've come a long way in the production of Honeywell–Grimes manuals. In the early 90's, most of their manuals (2000+) were in paper form, outdated, and needed revised to include many outstanding service bulletins and engineering changes which is always a red flag during ATA audits. The manuals were being delivered in paper form and the illustrations were inked on mylar. Today, they are being authored in an SGML environment in accordance with ATA ispec 2200. The illustrations are done in ISODRAW and exported to .cgm or .tif, whichever their end customer prefers. We deliver an SGML file and a .pdf for them to post on their Web site for downloading.
We currently produce an average of 200 documents per year that range from 10 to 500 pages each. Schedules require delivery of a first draft within 30 days, and turnaround for the final document, after receiving comments, ranges from a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 3 days. Our project manager works on-site at Honeywell–Grimes 2 days a week to provide close harmony with engineering and ILS to ensure the latest data gets incorporated into the manuals. O'Neil also has access to Honeywell's DMAND system (via the Web) which houses all of their engineering drawings, acceptance test procedures, and engineering change requests. O'Neil and Honeywell have developed a "seamless" collaboration in the development of manuals.
